(Moishe Zakharovich Shagal)
1887-1985
Liozna Belarus

Marc Chagall was one of the world’s most complete artist. His mediums include, Oil, gouache and watercolour paintings, sculpture, mosaics, tapestries, stained-glass windows, murals and set design. He was one of the first artists to be identified as a modernist and he was the last survivor of that ilk. His themes included Judaeo-Christian motifs, landscapes, portraits, the celebration of music and performing arts, his rich Russo-Hasidic culture, war scenes and the vibrant nostalgic memories of his hometown in Belarus, Vitebsk. In fact Vitebsk and its people, with their love of music and tradition accompanied by the memories of his childhood, seems to have permeated much of his work.
