Martinez’ early career spanned many disciplines, and while enjoying some recognition as a jeweler, he finally settled in to devote his total focus on developing his skills as a painter. Over the course of several years he had worked alongside many notable southwestern artists, namely Gorman, Howell, and Vinella. I would liken Martinez’ style to folk music, in that it focuses on ordinary people capturing their strength, dignity, independence and warmth. Hence, I would further liken him to Bob Dylan, in that his work is profound folk poetry that has a distinctive spirituality with a voice that, experienced once, is instantly recognizable in his other works. Martinez’ work, is indeed, a fanfare for common humanity.
